Mitmachstadt is a public art project of the art group "Laut'werk" and was organized in public space in various West German cities in 1979. At the beginning of the project, an embraced mud ground was created and through different programs the lecturers were invited to accompany the audiences to build something in the mud ground. During the programs, the appearance of the city was clearly slowly built up, and some situations also occurred simultaneously. What happened as a city that developed in this mud city? And how did the public deal with the situations?
Mitmachstadt Yilan was a representative project organized by Anchi Cheng, Weiqi Wang, Ling-Yu He and Eunbi Kwon in 2018. We tried to establish a connection to the local experts who live in Yilan and know the background of Yilan. Through the collaborations, we designed 6-day workshops and talked about the history of Yilan, including the development of industrialization, the mechanization of agriculture, the reuse of current public space and the issue of agricultural land use. How did the publics react to such a development from this mud city?
